Town Briefs: Tour de Mount Olive coming Sept. 28

MOUNT OLIVE

The Tour de Mount Olive, a 40-mile recreational ride that combines scenic routes, challenging climbs and a chance to see Mount Olive, will be held on Sept. 28. It starts and ends in Flanders Park, 40 Flanders-Bartley Road.

The ride is open to riders of all skill levels age 14 and older. T-shirts are guaranteed to all who pre-register before Sept. 9 and as supplies last after that date. Registration fees for the Tour de Mount Olive include the marked course ride, a pre-ride breakfast courtesy of Flanders Bagels, and a post-ride barbecue as well as random prize giveaways, according to a press release from the township.

Teams of 10 cyclists or more receive a 10 percent discount on their total registration. The largest team participating will not only receive their team discount but also a $25 gift card for the team captain and $10 gift cards for each participating member to a local Mount Olive business.

The Five Mile Family Ride and Decorating Contest is a five-mile flat course that encourages healthy family activity. This course will ride through the Clover Hill neighborhood. A course marshal will lead off this event so that all others can safely follow. This ride is open to riders of all skill level and ages. Families will ride together and a ratio of one adult per three children is required for safety purposes, the release said. There will also be a Trike-a-thon for ages 2 to 5.

EAST HANOVER

Kitchell Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 469 Ridgedale Ave., will hold worship service at 10 a.m. today with the Rev. Margaret Crowl preaching. Coffee hour and fellowship time will follow the services.

MORRISTOWN

The Garden State Comic Fest will be holding its second comic book show on Aug. 23 at the Hyatt at Headquarters Plaza.

Two Morris County men, Dave O'Hare and Sal Zurzolo, united by their love of comics, have teamed up to bring an affordable and fun comic book show to North Jersey.

"The show will have a little something for everyone, from the serious collector to the casual fan, from comics and art to vintage toys and pop culture items," O'Hare said. "We are not the biggest show, but our vendors and artists were handpicked for their quality.''

Among the most popular names on the list of comic creators are Ethan Van Sciver (Green Lantern, Flash), Herb Trimpe (Wolverine co-creator), Bob Camp (Ren & Stimpy), Dave Bullock (Star Wars: Clone Wars), Bob Wiacek (X-Men) and Charles Paul Wilson III (TMNT).

The festival will take place on Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Hyatt at Headquarters Plaza, 3 Speedwell Ave.

CHATHAM

The Masterwork Chorus has announced that it will hold auditions on Sept. 3 and 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Chatham United Methodist Church, 460 Main St.

Potential singers must have choir/choral experience and good vocal and sight-reading skills, according to a press release from the organization, which said that auditions may be scheduled by contacting Membership Chair Don MacGowan, at 973-479-4020 or via membership@masterwork.org.

RANDOLPH

Auditions for the County College of Morris (CCM) Shakespeare and Co. production of "The Taming of the Shrew" will be held in the CCM Dragonetti Auditorium, Student Community Center, on Sept. 3 and 10. Both auditions take place at 6:30 p.m.

The auditions are open to everyone and all roles, except for Kate and Petrucchio, are open to audition.

The show will be performed Nov. 19 to 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Dragonetti Auditorium.

PARSIPPANY

A 10-week course for college students in developing a career in law enforcement will be offered at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy on Monday evenings from 6 to 9:30 starting Sept. 29.

The course is a cooperative venture of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the county's Department of Law and Public Safety and the New Jersey Community Affairs Officers Association in partnership with colleges, universities and law enforcement groups throughout New Jersey.

Participants will be introduced to the work of law enforcement to broaden their perspectives and understanding of the criminal justice system and to better understand what it takes to enter the field of law enforcement, said Morris County Freeholder Director Tom Mastrangelo.

Sustainable Morristown presents the Morris County Sunday Supper Series, a multi-course dinner tasting experience from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the Hyatt Morristown.

Fosterfields Living Historical Farm will host "Buzz Buzz, Bee in the Know!" for visitors to learn more about honey and the irreplaceable role honeybees play in feeding our world through pollination, today from 1-3 p.m.

Knowledgeable and enthusiastic presenters Joseph Lelinho and Shaun Ananko will enlighten the audience about the importance of bees and teach about their busy and dedicated lives.

The fee for this event is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (65 and older), $4 for children 4-16, $2 for children 2-3 and free for children under age 2 and Friends of Fosterfields and Cooper Gristmill members with a current membership card. The fee includes visitation to the farm.

St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center is hosting its annual Ice Cream Social from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday at its Madison Campus, located at 575 Woodland Ave. Admission and parking are free. The purchase of ice cream is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under; it's $2 for frozen doggie treats. Multiple ice cream flavors will be available as well as an assortment of fun toppings. The Lake Hiawatha Branch of the Parsippany Library, located at 68 Nokomis Ave., will host "Hot Summer Nights/Hot African Drumming Circle" from 7-8:15 p.m. on Thursday.
