Sunday Supper Spotlight: SmartWorld Coffee

Dave Walters, managing partner of SmartWorld Coffee in Morristown and Denville, is no stranger to the sustainable food movement.

"I've owned health food businesses and restaurants since 1989," the 56-year-old Denville resident said, "and I've always been interested in promoting environmentally-sound foods and participating in beneficial community initiatives at the grassroots level."

His 2007 launch of SmartWorld Coffee, whose name is designed to help educate people about better ways of eating and relating to the environment, reflects his desire "to do something involving sustainably-harvested coffees that can help make an impact on the world," he said.

Hoping to help hard-working farmers secure a fair wage and support their families, Walters said, "we offer Fair Trade and organic-brewed and specialty espresso-based coffees sourced from smaller, local coffee farms in South America, and we also offer smoothies with all fruit — none of the chemicals, dyes, and stabilizers that some other commercial brands contain."

At this year's Morris County Sunday Supper Series event, the third in which SmartWorld Coffee has participated, it will be sampling its brand new line of homemade gluten-free baked goods "which are vegan, low in sugar, and made with great ingredients like coconut oil," he said.

Based on his outlets' success over the past seven years, Walters, who is also a board member of Morristown's Grow It Green Farm, is excited to see the market's increasing openness to healthy food derived from sustainable sources.

"I believe that if you can provide a great culinary and customer experience that makes it easy and accessible for people to make a change in the world, people will choose to spend their money where it will count," he said. "We're committed to supporting a better ecology and to sustaining farmers and we can't wait to participate in the upcoming Sunday Supper event," Walters said. "It's a great event, the food is fantastic, and it's wonderful to see so many people coming out to support it."

SmartWorld Coffee is located at 74 South Street in Morristown, tel. 973-359-9800 and at 2 Broadway in Denville, tel. 973-627-1600. For more information, visit www.smartworldcoffee.com.
