15) Rockaway, June 15, 2006--It was an innocuous assignment, take a portrait of the mother of a young Wharton man serving overseas. Then the phone rang. It was the her sonÕs rear detachment unit at Fort Hood, Texas saying her son, serving a second tour in Iraq was gravely injured when an explosive device detonated under the Humvee he was driving. I first met Army SPC. James Benoit, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and followed his story for years to Picatinny for his retirement ceremony, Auburndale, Florida for his wedding and back to Wharton where volunteers through 'Homes for Our Troops' built a home for Jim. Out of the many thousands of images I made spending time with Jim, this photo of him coming back to his high school alma mater of Morris Hills, walking the halls meant the most to me.
