A cool autumn breeze welcomed the Class of 2018 for freshman move-in day Saturday at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus in Florham Park.

About 500 freshman arrived with parents and boxes of possessions they will need for the fall semester, which begins on Monday. About 200 commuters bring the class to a total of about 700.

Their new address is Twombly Residence Hall, which university officials said has been spruced up with new paint, new flooring and new furniture.

The freshmen are not the first to arrive — several hundred students participating in fall athletics arrived a few weeks ago for preseason practice. Most of the freshman previously visited the campus during orientation sessions in July.

A candle-lighting and class pin ceremony was scheduled for 5 p.m. in the outdoor Italian Gardens to officially welcome them to FDU, just one of three four-year colleges located along the Route 124 corridor between Morris Township and Madison. Freshman at the College of St. Elizabeth in moved in on Aug. 20. Resident students at Drew University are scheduled to arrive on Aug. 29.
