Sparta police seize 267 bags of heroin, arrest 3

SPARTA – More than 250 bags of heroin were found and three people arrested after a traffic stop on Route 15, police said.

At 3:50 p.m. on March 5, Patrolman Tom Snyder observed a 2006 Hyundai speeding on Route 15 north in the area of the 10 mile marker.

Snyder stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, Alyssa N. Gentile, 18, of Florida, N.Y., and noticed a person passed out in the backseat and assorted items of drug paraphernalia in plain view.

Snyder questioned the individuals in the Hyundai and then conducted a search that uncovered a bundle of heroin in the center console and additional drug paraphernalia items throughout the vehicle, police said.

Snyder also found five “bricks” of heroin hidden in the bottom of an open Doritos bag, police said.

The passengers in the vehicle, Brittney M. Wahnon, 22, from Hawley, Pa, and Carlos R. Guerrero, 22, from Paterson, N.Y., along with the driver were placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters.

In total, 267 bags of heroin and assorted prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia were seized from the vehicle, police said.

Gentile, Wahnon and Guerrero were charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute, possession of a prescription narcotic, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Gentile was also issued motor vehicle summonses for speeding, controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, maintenance of lamps, failure to keep right, unregistered motor vehicle and unsafe tires.

Wahnon and Guerrero were issued motor vehicle summonses for failing to wear a seatbelt. They were all released pending a court date.
