Town Briefs: Upcoming events in Morris

Celebrate Irish culture, discover great finds at a rummage sale, walk for charity--here’s what’s happening in your Morris community, or nearby.

MOUNTAIN LAKES

The Morris County Retirees Education Association Philanthropic Fund (MCREAP) will be holding a buffet luncheon and tricky tray on April 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Zeris Inn, Route 46E in Mountain Lakes.

The cost for the luncheon is $26. Tricky tray tickets will be sold on site. Some of the prizes include: 40” TV and Disney Park Hopper Tickets. Reservations are required in advance by April 8.

SPARTA

Durga Tree International is holding their third annual Lacing Up for Freedom Walk-a-thon on May 21.

Since the majority of people Durga Tree serves around the globe are vulnerable minors and their mothers, this year’s theme is Walking to End Child Trafficking. Registration is complimentary for all, including leashed canine companions.

Prizes are awarded to walkers who reach tiered fundraising goals. There will be children’s activities, a live music duo, sponsored beverages/breakfast snacks and lunch following the walk.

DENVILLE

The Morris County Vocational School District is encouraging Morris County tenth grade students and their parents to consider applying to one of the school’s career and technical share time education programs. Applications are now available online at www.mcvts.org/admissions.

Students enrolled in the two-year, half day programs will have the opportunity to receive daily career and technical training as part of their junior and/or senior high school program.

Share Time programs include: Auto Body and Collision Repair, Auto Service Technology, Carpentry, Computer Aided Design and Drafting, Cosmetology, Electrical Trades, Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing (in partnership with County College of Morris), Plumbing and Pipefitting, and Welding Technologies.

In addition, there are special class programs designed for students who require a smaller class size. These Share Time programs include, Fundamentals of Building & Grounds Maintenance, Fundamentals of Food Services, and Fundamentals of Retail and Supermarket Careers.

All programs are designed for students to learn through a combination of classroom instruction and hand-on activities utilizing the latest technologies. Upon completion, students will be prepared for careers and pursue workforce placement or may continue on to four-year college or university.

PARSIPPANY

American Cancer Society - Relay for Life of Central Morris County is hosting a Dine and Donate fundraiser on March 21 at Kafe Mozart, 2900 Route 10.

Ten percent of all purchases from dine-in, take-out and delivery orders will be donated to Housing Partnership of Morris County, according to a press release from the Parsippany Chamber of Commerce.

Relay for Life, Central Morris County will be held on June 4 starting at 2 p.m. at County College of Morris, 214 Center Grove Road.

Irish history and culture will be celebrated at “Luck O’ the Farm at Fosterfields” from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 16 at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, located at 73 Kahdena Road.

Learn about Irish culture through dance, crafts, folklore, music and hands-on farm activities. Help with hands-on farm chores like churning cream into butter, cracking corn for chicken feed, weighing eggs, and planting seeds in flats. Hop aboard an open-air wagon ride around to tour the farm.

Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (65+), $6 for children ages 4-16, and $4 for children ages 2 and 3, free for children under age 2. Friends members are half price with a current membership card.

HACKETTSTOWN

A free vintage jewelry and accessories program is scheduled for March 28 at 2 p.m. at Heath Village Retirement Community.

Sharon Kornstein, certified image professional, and founder of Image Design, will demonstrate how to incorporate vintage pieces into everyday style, according to a press release from Heath Village.

DOVER

St. John’s Episcopal Church is hosting a Rummage Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at the church, located at 11 South Bergen Street in Dover.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to support church activities.

The church is accepting donations of gently used clothing, household items, toys, kitchen items, jewelry and holiday items. No large furniture.

Items for donation can be brought to the church on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between the hours of 8:45-11:15 a.m. If these hours are not convenient, call Manny at 973-598-5160 to arrange an appointment.

DENVILLE

American Legion Post 390 Denville New Jersey Ladies Auxiliary will host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday at the American Legion Post, located at 9 Legion Place in Denville.

Cost is $12 per person.

MORRISTOWN

The Evening Social Services Department of the Woman's Club of Morristown will be selling refreshments at the Morris County St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Club members will be set up in front of their clubhouse, the historic Dr. Lewis Condict House, at 51 South Street in Morristown.

Available will be coffee, hot cocoa, hot tea, bottled water, Gatorade, bagels, cookies, snacks, and soda bread, as well as Irish-themed trinkets. All proceeds go to Project Gratitude to support hospitalized veterans.

To further benefit the vets, the club will be accepting donations of toiletry items (full-sized shampoo, deodorant, soap, et cetera) to be included in gift bags given to veterans.

MADISON

Grace Church Madison will host a concert by acclaimed German baritone Johannes Held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Church,located at 4 Main St.

Held will give a concert of Schubert Lieder from Winterreise, accompanied by Madison’s Helen Raymaler, piano, followed by a masterclass n Schubert Lieder.

The concert is open to the public for a freewill offering at the door. The masterclass is open to serious singers who would like to be coached on a Schubert Lied. Email director@harmonium.org to apply ($40).

ROXBURY

The Ferro-Monte Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will Celebrate Women of Character, Courage and Commitment as they Salute Women’s History Month at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Roxbury Twp. Free Public Library, located at 103 Main St.

Attendees will share and celebrate the women who inspire us.

Ferro-Monte Chapter meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month from October to May, according to a press release from the organization, which said that prospective members are always welcome.

MADISON

The Madison Area YMCA and St. Baldrick’s Foundation will hold a 4-hour Spinathon from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday at the Y’s Family Center, located at 111 King’s Road in Madison.

All proceeds donated to the event will be split 50/50 to help support the Madison Area YMCA’s LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a cancer survivors’ program, and St. Baldrick’s an international childhood cancer charity.

Participants may register at the Madison Area YMCA Welcome Center. Cyclists are encouraged to collect pledges. Pledge forms are available at the Family Center’s Welcome Center and Fitness Center or at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center.

The cycling instructor schedule is as follows: Karen Tom will teach 8-9 a.m.; Ashlee Hodge will teach 9-10 a.m. and Carey Ahsler will teach 10-11 a.m. All three instructors will teach 11 a.m. to noon.
