COLLEGE OF ST. ELIZABETH

The College of St. Elizabeth announced last week that it is introducing new undergraduate and graduate programs in health administration. Enrollment is now underway for fall 2016. Internships will play a key role in both programs to provide real-world experience and networking opportunities.

HANOVER

Matthew Ehrenburg, a graduate of Hanover Park High School and a senior communication sciences and disorders and Spanish double major at The College of Wooster, received the Mary Sanborn Allen Prize at Wooster’s 46th Annual Recognition Banquet. The Mary Sanborn Allen Prize is awarded to a student majoring in a foreign language who has benefited most from study outside the United States.

HOPATCONG

Jake Dorman was selected for the Greater Morris County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award

Jake Dorman was selected for the Greater Morris County Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete Award. Dorman was invited to an awards dinner, where football players from across the area were acknowledged for being great student-athletes and role models. Dorman is planning on attending Salisbury University in the fall.

MOUNTAIN LAKES

Mountain Lakes High School students participated in the 2016 Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing and brought home the 2016 Sportsmanship Award in the Northeast Regional Competition.

Four Mountain Lakes High School students participated in the 2016 Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing and brought home the 2016 Sportsmanship Award in the Northeast Regional Competition. Mohammed Abdelal (freshman), Darryl Chance (sophomore), Juan Cornejo (Senior) and Alik Zalmover (Sophmore) were the recipients of the award. In addition, Alik Zalmover won an All Star Award for his amazing performance throughout the tournament.

On Wednesday, 25 Wildwood fifth graders presented the musical production “Go Fish.” The play was directed by 4th grade teacher Corlee Soracco, and school music teacher Maureen Butler.

Braircliff Middle School’s top 10 spellers were invited to The Morris Area Regional Middle School Spelling Bee. On March 11, Braircliff Middle School’s top 10 spellers were invited to The Morris Area Regional Middle School Spelling Bee. There were approximately 150 students participating in the competition. Mountain Lakes very own Zachary Tomayo finished 6th place in the region. The following BC students were eligible to attend the competition: Conrad Lewis, Catherine Pickett, Navin Ranganathan, Sabrina Ravin, Maimoonah Shafqat, Eric Shertzer, Alex Span, Catherine Tamarelli, Zachary Tamayo, Leon Xie.

LONG HILL/MORRIS CATHOLIC/COLLEGE OF ST. ELIZABETH

Michael St. Pierre will be receiving his Ed.D. for the College of Saint Elizabeth in May.

Michael St. Pierre, a resident of the Gillette section of the township, defended his doctoral dissertation titled “iPads and the Skill of Collaboration: Does the Use of iPads Among High School Freshmen Impact Their Ability to Collaborate?” at the College of St. Elizabeth on March 14. This is the final step in his journey toward his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership as he will graduate in May 2016.

St. Pierre earned a B.A. in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. He began a career in educational ministry at St. Vincent de Paul parish in Stirling, N.J., and then at Oratory Prep School in Summit. He completed his first M.A. in theology from Seton Hall University and a second M.A. in educational leadership from Seton Hall University. He is presently in his seventh year as president of Morris Catholic High School in Denville.

MOUNT OLIVE

The 2015-2016 school year in Mount Olive will end a week earlier than originally scheduled. The last day of school will be Friday, June 17. The change comes as a result of five unused snow days. Mount Olive High School’s graduation ceremony will now take place on June 17. Mount Olive Middle School’s promotion ceremony will take place on June 16.

NETCONG

Bernadette Dalesandro, Netcong Board of Education Member, organized a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner “Italian Style” at the Knights of Columbus in Netcong. The event raised $10,000 for the Netcong Educational Foundation.

On March 5, a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner “Italian Style” was held at the Knights of Columbus in Netcong and raised $10,000. The event was sponsored by: Netcong Educational Foundation (NEF), Netcong-Stanhope Rotary, Netcong Board of Education, Netcong Elementary School PTA, Knights of Columbus, and High Grade Beverage.

On March 11, students in grades 5-8 at Netcong Elementary School attended a school dance that was sponsored by the Netcong Borough Municipal Alliance. Student Council Advisor, Kim Arbolino, organized the event and worked closely with the Municipal Alliance on acquiring popcorn and drinks to be served to the students at the dance free of charge. The theme of the dance was, “Instead of Drugs, I…” Each student who attended the dance received a shamrock when they entered the school gym. Students were to write on the shamrocks what they do instead of doing drugs. Those shamrocks were then posted around the gym and used as decorations and a reminder to the students to remember to make healthy choices.

ROXBURY

Roxbotix, the Roxbury High School Robotics team, competed at an event held by the Mount Olive School District on March 5 and 6, which was the first competition of the 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). For this year’s FIRST Stronghold challenge, teams were asked to build robots that could play a robot version of the game Storm the Castle where possible alliances could be formed. Alliances compete against each other to breach their opponents’ defenses, known as outer works, and capture the opposing teams tower. They score points by crossing elements of their opponents’ outer works, scoring boulders in their opponents’ tower goals, and surrounding and scaling their opponents’ tower itself. Roxbury’s robot known as “Gustav” was selected to play on an alliance in the playoff tournament at the end of the event, but bowed out in the quarter-final round.

SPARTA/POPE JOHN

An Easter basket drive was held at Pope John XXIII Regional High School. Katherine Stehr, a member of the English Department, coordinates the event each year. The school’s collection of jelly beans, chocolate bunnies, plush animals, crayons, coloring books, and story books, in conjunction with the non-profit Pass-It-Along of Sparta, benefits Tilly’s Kids – an extension of the House of Mercy Mission serving the community of Newark.

 

Gaige Moore has been selected as a 2016 New Jersey Affiliate runner-up for the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing.

In addition, Pope John is pleased to announce that junior Gaige Moore of Sussex has been selected as a 2016 New Jersey Affiliate runner-up for the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing. Moore was recognized for her demonstrated aptitude and interest in information technology/computing, leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post-secondary education.
