WAYNE - A Lake Hiawatha woman was arrested after she called in a false report and later bragged about it on social media, police said.

At about 3:15 a.m. Monday, Officer Gergory Halligan and Sgt. Donald Davidson responded to Mother’s Ale House on Mountain View Boulevard off of Route 23 in Wayne for a report of a woman being attacked in the parking lot, Capt. Lawrence Martin said.

The caller – later identified as Hayley Oates, 25, of Lake Hiawatha – dialed 911 and said the attacker was in a blue pickup truck before abruptly ending the phone call, Martin said.

Responding officers found no evidence or witnesses of the alleged assault, and found nothing on surveillance cameras in the area to support the caller’s claim, Martin said.

Detectives were informed that a false 911 call had been made, designed to draw patrol officers to Mother’s Ale House so Oates and an unidentified male companion could leave the nearby Grasshopper Too bar and restaurant without being arrested for driving under the influence, Martin said.

Following an extensive investigation, Detective Sgt. Robert Simpson and Detective Dave Collins located and arrested Oates, charging her with filing a false report to law enforcement and creating false public alarm.

A key piece of evidence in the investigation was a post on a social media account operated by Oates which read, “lmao.. 2 mins later the cop peals out..silly piggies tricks r for u,” Martin said.

Martin said Wayne police take false police reports seriously.

“Officer’s place themselves in harm’s way daily responding to real events throughout Wayne Township and in support of our partners in public safety,” Martin said. “Falsely creating a situation that requires officers to execute emergency response, indicating that an event exits that’s a threat to life or property is inexcusable and reprehensible behavior.”

Martin noted that Paramus Police Officer Vincent Brook died in 1993 while responding to a false call for a shooting at the Garden State Plaza.

“That horrible memory resonates in our minds,” he said, “And drives our response to this harassment of the law enforcement and public safety community.”
