Madison police save man in cardiac arrest

Staff report

MADISON – Three police officers are credited with saving the life of a man who collapsed in his home and was without a pulse until they administered life saving treatment.

At 12 a.m. on Aug. 29, police were dispatched to a Madison residence for an unconscious male.

The patient’s family reported that the man had collapsed while walking in the residence, according to Acting Lt. John R. Miscia.

Cpl. Vincent Dellavalle, Patrolmen Matthew Mirabella and Joseph DiRocco responded to the home, where they found the patient, a 79-year-old male, lying on the floor in cardiac arrest, Miscia said.

The officers quickly evaluated the man and noticed he was not breathing and did not have a pulse, Miscia said.

They quickly began lifesaving efforts and started CPR before applying the AED (automated external defibrillator) and administering a shock, Miscia said.

The man’s pulse began to beat again and members of the Madison Fire Department, Madison Ambulance Squad and Atlantic Health Paramedics arrived on scene to join in the lifesaving efforts, Miscia said.

The patient was ultimately transported to Morristown Medical Center where he was in coma for several days. However, the man is now out of the coma and ready for release from hospital so he can return home, Miscia said.
