1 Thing We Love About Morris: Weekends at daybreak on Route 287

Morristown Daily Record
Route 287 at dawn

The Daily Record has a new feature called 1 Thing We Love About Morris County. Each weekday around noon we will post a picture and a brief description of something in Morris County, or the surrounding area, that we love. Today we look at a rare but predictable occurrence on our normally crowded highways.

Weekends at daybreak on Route 287

We are so used to our interstate arteries being clogged with traffic, trucks and incompetent out-of-state drivers that some of us have come to think it exists 24 hours a day. But if you get up early enough on the weekends, routes 287 and 80 can be all yours. When conditions allow — as they do before people wake up on Saturdays, Sundays and the occasional holiday — Morris County residents can actually drive to Sandy Hook and the Jersey Shore in just over an hour. And the freedom of three to seven lanes, all going in your direction, is exhilarating.
