PARSIPPANY - A Morristown man believed to be struck by a motor vehicle was found Tuesday night unconscious in the middle of Route 46 with internal injuries, according to a police report.

Police responded at 7:49 p.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian was injured at the intersection of New Road and eastbound Route 46. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim, a 23-year-old male, lying in the middle lane of traffic on eastbound Route 46, unconscious and suffering from internal injuries.

The pedestrian was later identified as Jose Dominguez, who according to police was attempting to cross Route 46 east from the south side of the roadway when he was struck by a 2002 Nissan Altima being driven by Esterina Herman, 58, of West Caldwell. Herman had the right of way, according to the report, and was traveling in the middle lane through the intersection of New Road under a green light. No charges have been filed.

Paramedics and the Rockaway Neck First Aid Squad arrived to treat the victim and transport him to Morristown Medical Center, where he was upgraded to fair condition Wednesday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson..

Parsippany Police Department Traffic Crash Investigator Patrol Officer Michael Sprung is leading the investigation and any witnesses are asked to call 973-263-4300. The Morris County Sheriff’s Department CID and Laser Team also responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The busy intersection has been the site of multiple pedestrian accidents in the past. Lake Hiawatha resident Stefani Z. Kuzmik, 83, was killed on Dec. 19, 2006, while attempting to cross Route 46 near New Road when an eastbound 2002 Mitsubishi Montero struck her. The driver was determined to have had the green light and was observing the speed limit at the time of the accident, according to police.

Another township resident was seriously injured and required surgery after being struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk across Route 46 at New Road on Oct. 7, 2013. The 30-year-old man, whose name was not released, was crossing from the north to the south at New Road when he was hit by a Lake Hiawatha resident driving a Toyota Camry through the intersection under the legal speed limit, according to investigating officers.
