Rick Porcello of Chester had another rough outing last night. He was lifted in the third inning of what turned into a 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Porcello allowed six runs, five of them earned, on 10 hits -- including a leadoff homer on a slider that stayed up -- in two-plus innings of work. It ranks with some of the worst performances in Red Sox history, according to Gordon Edes of ESPN, who used to cover the Red Sox.

On April 28, 1982, Peabody native John Tudor gave up 10 hits and eight runs in 1 2/3 innings to Kansas City on April 28, 1982. Wes Ferrell gave up 10 hits and seven runs in two innings to the Washington Senators on Sept. 2, 1935.

It was the seventh time Porcello has allowed at least five runs in his 20 starts this season, and the second time he failed to get out of the third inning.

Porcello is 5-11, and his 5.81 ERA is the highest in the American League. He is one of just four pitchers who has allowed 20 homers this season.
