Mike Wallace was in the car, en route to a summer league baseball game with his younger brother Gavin and two other Fairfield University teammates, a drive they'd taken many times. But this drive was very different. Wallace found out via Twitter that he'd been selected in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.

Wallace, a junior right-hander from Madison, was chosen No. 907 in the 30th round by Pittsburgh.

"It's still surreal. It hasn't settled in yet," Wallace told FairfieldStags.com. "I can't put the feeling into words right now."

A first team all-MAAC pitcher with a 2.64 ERA, Wallace tied for the conference lead with 58 innings pitched and six complete games — tied for fourth in NCAA Division I. He struck out 39 batters and only walked 12 in 58 innings pitched. His 3.58 career ERA is sixth all-time at Fairfield.

"It's a great tribute to his hard work and everything he has put in over three years," Stags coach Bill Currier said. "We saw his ability and his potential and witnessed the way he works, so it's very rewarding to see his hard work getting recognized."
