Randolph boys, Mendham girls claim large-school NJAC team titles

ROCKAWAY – Delbarton’s Luke Mayer came in third during the preliminary race for the 110-meter hurdles at the NJAC Large-School Championships on Wednesday at Morris Hills, but some sage advice from a teammate helped when it came time to run the final.

“My prelim race wasn’t good at all so my teammate Shawn Ohazurike kept telling me before, ‘Just focus on a clean run. Just run it smooth,’ so that’s what I set out to do,” Mayer said.

The advice paid off and Mayer won the final in a meet-record 14.84 seconds, besting the former record of 14.91 set in 2012 by Randolph’s Kyle Holder, who is now running at Rutgers.

“It was definitely really nice because I won it last year as well, so trying to win it again was a big priority of mine,” said Mayer, who ran a 15.12 in the prelim. “Coming off that 10th hurdle I knew I just had to dig in deep because the kid from Roxbury (Dan Giuliano), he was just right there.”

Giuliano finished second and also came in under the former meet record with a time of 14.88, four seconds better than his preliminary time. Mayer’s teammate Ohazurike was third.

It was also a good day for Mayer’s significant other, Randolph’s Elly Scherer, who won the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.87. In the prelim, Scherer came in second to Chatham’s Simone Kirton, who set the meet record with a time of 14.73. The old record was 15.03 set by Randolph’s Samantha Kral in 2012.

Kirton led until the final seconds when a late kick fueled Scherer and put her in first.

“I just really wanted to have a good time, really, and just to beat Simone,” Scherer said. “That was kind of something I really wanted to get to and it’s just a really awesome feeling. I just know she holds strong the whole race so I just knew I really had to kick in there to really get her because I started dying in the middle of the race and I knew I can’t give up.”

Mayer and Scherer tried to both win their respective hurdles races at the Morris County Tournament during the indoor season, but it didn’t work out, so the double win on Wednesday was extra special to the pair, and also fueled their rivalry a bit.

“When we first starting talking she went on MileSplit and saw that both of our hurdle times were the exact same, 15.04 each, and so it was like, if we race we would tie,” Mayer said. “That’s when I said, ‘No, I think I would win,’ and that’s when we started this little rivalry.”

Montville junior Leah Wis took the discus (129-0) and high jump (5-2).

“I’m a little disappointed but I’m also happy because I’m under the weather and I know what I have to work on,” she said. “So at least I have something to drive towards.”

Randolph senior Liz Lansing continued her winning ways, taking the 800 (2:16.46) with teammate Nora May McSorley third.

“Honestly all I wanted to do was stay relaxed, stay calm, focused, block everything out and I know that all these girls are so fast and as long as I stick with the front of the pack, they push me to a fast time, that’s all I wanted,” Lansing said. “It feels amazing, more than I expected.”

Mendham senior Christian Kildal-Brandt won the 200 after finishing second in the 400 on Tuesday. Kildal-Brandt lost to record-setting Randolph senior Greg Stickle in the 400, but came back to beat him and James Lienhardt in the 200.

“We’ve been competing since, I’ve known James since I was 10 years old, it’s good to have a rivalry and I’m glad I came out on top today,” Kildal-Brandt said. “I was a little disappointed (Tuesday), I would have liked to run faster, of course I like to win, but he ran a great race and I’m happy I came out today on top.”
