Morris XC alumni reach NCAA Championships
Many Morris County alumni qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The finale will be held Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The top two teams from each region qualified automatically, and individuals could advance based on their performance. Teams and individuals were also selected as at-large entries.
Senior Morgan Pearson (New Vernon/Delbarton) finished eighth (30:06.36) as Colorado won the NCAA Mountain Region on Friday morning.
Wake Forest senior Samantha Jones (Randolph) finished third (20:35.3) at the NCAA Southeast Regional, qualifying for the NCAA Championships as an individual. Richmond senior Tara Hanley (Chatham) crossed the line 30th overall (21:51.6). James Madison freshman Olivia Viparina (Roxbury) finished 112th (23:07.9).
Junior Emily Bushey (Vernon) finished 139th as Providence won the NCAA Northeast Regional in Boston. Senior Collin Frost (Randolph) was Binghamton's top finisher, crossing 55th (31:49)
Sophomore Colette Richter (Mountain Lakes) came in 69th (22:01.8) as Wisconsin placed fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Rutgers sophomore Allyson Black (Morris Knolls) finished 18th (21:26.8) at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Princeton on Friday. Lehigh freshman Ashleigh Thurston (Morris Hills) finished 129th (23:45.4). LaSalle junior Stephen Lewandowski (Mountain Lakes) finished 82nd (32:43.9). Rider sophomore Nick Kontos (West Morris) was 93rd (32:58.1), with senior teammate Sam Knipper (Randolph) 113th. Lafayette sophomore Matt Weintraub was 129th.
Allegheny senior Alyssa Brindle (Morris Knolls) finished 18th (22:38) at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championship.The Gators received an at-large bid to the D-III Championship on Saturday in Winneconne, Wisconsin, its first trip since 2007.
Ramapo senior Maximino Meneses (Morris Knolls) was 58th at the D-III Atlantic Regional. Stevens junior Kaela Earrusso (Sparta/Pope John) was 83rd (23:55.5). SUNY New Paltz senior Danielle Halikias (Mount Olive) was 107th (24:19.9).
Susquehanna junior Amy Kaschak (Jefferson) finished 73rd (23:52.6) at the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday.
Volleyball
Moravian junior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann (Roxbury) was named to the Landmark Conference second team for the third year in a row. Kornmann tallied 324 kills, 64 blocks and a .211 hitting percentage, as well as 122 digs, 30 aces and 10 assists.
Rachel Selmore (Morristown) had eight kills, a block and a dig as Ramapo defeated Manhattanville 3-1 to win the ECAC title.
Elon junior Ally Karle (Mount Olive) had two kills, six blocks and a dig in a 3-0 sweep of Northeastern on Sunday.
Junior Caroline Laton (Kinnelon) had five kills and nine blocks as Farleigh Dickinson dropped its season finale, 3-2, to LIU-Brooklyn on Sunday. She had five kills, six blocks as the Knights fell to St. Francis (Brooklyn), 3-2, on Saturday.
Men's soccer
Drew senior defender Daniel Giraldo (Madison) was selected to the Landmark Conference first team. He contributed to a 0.88 goals-against average during his four years at Drew. Scranton junior midfielder Tim DiBisceglie (Mine Hill) was also selected to the first team. He tied for first on the team with four goals and two assists.
Senior Michael Innocenzi (Delbarton) scored the final goal of Harvard's 6-0 rout of Penn on Saturday.
Sophomore Harrison Steadman (Kinnelon) scored a first-half goal, but UNC-Charlotte fell to Marshall in a shootout in a Conference USA quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Sophomore Rich Castro (Roxbury) scored Centenary's lone goal off a through ball from Justin White (Dover), in a 5-1 loss to Rutgers-Newark in the ECAC Tournament on Wednesday.
Women's soccer
Senior Krista Longo (Morristown) notched one goal and one assist in William Smith's 5-1 win over Roger Williams. The Herons advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Swimming
Senior Jenna Immormino (Chester) won the 50 free by more than a second and the 100 free by exactly a second as Cornell defeated Dartmouth and lost to Harvard on Saturday.
Sophomore Katie Gorman (Whippany Park) won the 50 freestyle, swam the second leg of Washington's winning 200 free relay, and was second in the 100 butterfly in a dual-meet defeat of St. Mary's on Friday.
Football
Sophomore quarterback Nick Crusco (Oak Ridge) had 20 completions on 37 attempts for 208 yards and one touchdown as Susquehanna defeated Juniata, 24-17. Junior Evan Argiriou (Kinnelon) kicked a 21-yard field goal and three extra points.
Junior Luke Foukas (Pequannock) had seven tackles, including two for losses, and a fumble recovery in Franklin & Marshall's season-ending 21-7 loss to Gettysburg.
Men's basketball
Jonathan Berntsen (Chatham) had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Wheaton to a 80-68 victory over Franklin College.
Junior Patrick Barron (Long Valley) hit nine three-pointers to help Stevens to a 92-73 win over Bryn Athyn College.
Rashaan Spencer (Mount Olive) scored 27 points to lead Centenary to a 80-60 win over Maritime.
Junior guard Zach Frick (Sparta) had 10 points to help William Paterson defeat Drew, 70-62.
Women's basketball
Senior forward Jessica Porada (Morristown) had 18 points and nine rebounds for Ursinus in its 63-53 loss to Lycoming.
Charlotta Schum (East Hanover) had five rebounds in TCNJ's 59-55 loss to Widener University.
