Staff report

SPARTA – A Pennsylvania man was charged with heroin possession after he crashed into another car, police said.

At 12:36 p.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched to Lafayette Road for the report of a motor vehicle accident.

Cpl. Rob Fraser arrived on scene and was advised by the driver of the vehicle that was struck that the driver of the other vehicle was acting very nervously and had thrown an object into the weeds by his vehicle after being told that police were on their way to the scene.

Fraser went to the area where the item had been tossed and recovered a Dunkin Donuts bag containing 17 small bags of heroin, police said.

Fraser approached Thomas M. Costanzo, 26, from Dingmans Ferry, Pa., and asked him if the contraband was his and Costanzo said it was, police said.

Costanzo was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters, where he was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and given motor vehicle summonses for careless driving, following too closely and CDS in a motor vehicle. He was released several hours later with a pending court date.
