MORRIS PLAINS – A 60-year-old Denville woman attempting to walk across Route 10 was struck and killed by a motor vehicle Wednesday night, police said.

Mary Cox was crossing from the west bound side to the east bound side of the state highway at about 11 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by Marta Henao-Norena, 49, of Dover, according to a police report. Cox had crossed over a concrete barrier approximately a quarter-mile east of the Route 53 intersection and was struck in the roadway.

She died a short time later at Morristown Medical Center, police said.

Cox was crossing the highway in an area not designated for pedestrian crossings, police said. The closest pedestrian crossing was located at the intersection of routes 10 and 202 (Littleton Road).

Employees of several businesses in the area said they see people crossing the highway there all the time.

The Morris County Sheriffs Department was called to assist in the investigation, which temporarily closed a portion of Route 10. The road was reopened and the investigation is ongoing. No summonses have been issued.

Police did not provide a description of the vehicle being driven by Henao-Norena. The posted speed limit on the road is 50 mph, and the roadway area was lit, police said.
