Police Blotter: Theft from gym in Hanover; stealing from the library in Sparta

HANOVER

•At 11:50 p.m. on Dec. 31, Patrolman Ed Zakrzweski stopped Nixon Canales–Flores, of Hyattsville, Md. for having an obstructed view when a warrant was found. The warrant was an Outstanding Administrative Warrant of Removal from the United States Immigration Violation. ICE was contacted and were responding from Union County to pick up Nixon. Nixon was issued summons for obstructed view and unlicensed driver and released to ICE.

•At 12:24 p.m. on Jan. 2, Patrolman Christopher Martino took a report of two victims who had their lockers broken into while working out at a gym on South Jefferson Road. The first victim stated he locked his locker and when he returned it was unlocked and his belongings were rummaged through, but nothing was missing. The second victim said his lock was missing and 20 single dollars were missing from his pant pocket. A person of interest in the theft is a man who bought a day pass and only stayed for about 28 minutes; he was described as a black male, mid 20’s, short hair, wearing a black hooded jacket, white T- shirt black jeans and Timberland style boots.

JEFFERSON

•On Dec. 10, Patrick Hannigan-Devine, 20, of Jefferson, was arrested by Mount Arlington police on $500 Jefferson Municipal Court warrant. He was turned over to the Jefferson Police Department and transported to the Morris County Correction Facility in lieu of bail.

•On Dec. 10, a resident of Alpine Drive reported that she ordered an Apple iPad from Best Buy that UPS said was delivered but the resident never received the package.

•On Dec. 11, Lauren Sanchez, 20, of Succasunna, was arrested at scene of motor vehicle stop on an $850 Rockaway Twp. Municipal Court warrant. She was turned over to Rockaway Twp. police.

•On Dec. 11, Dana Vail, 24, of Newton, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance after a motor vehicle stop on Route 15. Vail was later released pending a Municipal Court appearance.

•On Dec. 13, Janemarie Squillace, 45, of Suffern, N.Y. was observed traveling the wrong way on Route 15. It was later determined that the driver was possibly intoxicated. Driver was issued numerous summonses including DWI, open container of alcohol and driving while suspended. She was later released pending a Municipal Court appearance.

•On Dec. 18, a resident of Crescent Drive reported that unknown actor(s) made numerous scratches to a vehicle parked in her driveway.

•On Dec. 18, Catherine Pfeifer, 54, of Wayne, was arrested for DWI after being found asleep at the wheel at a traffic light at the intersection of Edison Road and Route 15 north. Driver was charged with DWI and was later released pending a Municipal Court appearance.

•On Dec. 18, a resident Hickory Road reported the theft of $50 worth of merchandise that was delivered to his residence by UPS.

LONG HILL

•On Dec. 28, police located two juveniles in a vehicle parked at the south end of Rainbow Drive and found one to be in possession of large knife, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. The juvenile was arrested, processed and turned over to a parent, with a pending court appearance.

•At 6:04 p.m. on Dec. 30, police observed numerous people enter Gillette Liquors, located at 399 Valley Road, and one exited with alcoholic beverages. Police determined that Julia Oberhaus, 21, of Millington, had entered the store to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages with the other underage people that she was in the car with. As such, Oberhaus was issued a summons for purchasing alcoholic beverages for minors with a pending court date.

•On Dec. 31, police investigated a motor vehicle crash at about 9:49 a.m. at the intersection of Valley Road and Warren Avenue. Alix Templeman, 17, of Stirling, was traveling east on Valley Road, when a vehicle driven by Philip Zoppi, 52, of Gillette, attempted to cross Valley Road from South Warren Avenue to Warren Avenue in front of Templeman. However, Templeman was unable to stop and vehicle struck Zoppi’s vehicle. As a result of the crash no injuries were reported, however Zoppi was issued a summons for failure to yield.

MOUNT OLIVE

•At 12:46 a.m. on Jan. 3, Officer Lonnie Elbaum was patrolling Route 46 in the area of Manor House Road when he observed a 2007 Chevrolet parked alongside the Valley National Bank. Elbaum approached the vehicle to investigate and identified the driver as John Proffer, 45, of Oakmont, Pa., who appeared to be impaired due to alcohol consumption. Elbaum conducted field sobriety tests and Proffer was charged with D.W.I., reckless driving, and refusal to submit to breath samples. Proffer was released to a sober driver and he has a pending court appearance.

•At 6:09 p.m. on Jan. 3, Officer Scott Price was dispatched to Shoprite located at 90 Bartley Road for a shoplifter in custody. Richard Federowicz, 70, of Lebanon, was charged with shoplifting and released on his own recognizance with a pending court appearance.

SPARTA

•Police were contacted by an employee of the Sparta Library on Dec. 2 who reported that multiple electronic items had been stolen from the building. These thefts had occurred over the previous six weeks. After further investigation by department’s Detective Bureau, Kaseem Batchelor, 36, of Newton, was arrested for the theft on Dec. 31. Batchelor was an employee of the commercial cleaning company that serviced the library. He was processed at headquarters and released pending a court date.
