Bail was maintained at $100,000 Tuesday on an Irvington man who was charged last week with severely beating a 3-year-old boy he called his step-son, and the child’s mother, at the Knights Inn in Montville.

Suspect Maurice Pearson, 28, was charged Friday with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child for the alleged beating of the little boy, and with aggravated assault for injuring the mother.

Morris County Assistant Prosecutors Matthew Troiano and Brian DiGiacomo, both assigned to the major crimes unit, were at the bail review conducted by Superior Court Judge Stuart Minkowitz in Morristown. Troiano would not comment on the extent of the child’s injuries or his condition.

The injured boy has been identified as Ty’mil Solomon. His biological father, Willie Shakeit Solomon, was murdered in Altoona, Pa., on Oct. 31, 2013, according to published reports in the Altoona Mirror.

Authorities have said that the 25-year-old mother was in a dating relationship with Pearson, who allegedly beat her and the boy on Friday in a room at the Knights Inn in the Pine Brook section. Troiano told the judge that Pearson refers to the boy as his “step-son.”

Asking that bail be maintained at $100,000, Troiano told the judge that Pearson has multiple aliases and ties to Pennsylvania, and spoke for at least an hour with police on Friday during which he falsely identified himself as Lloyd Pearson until he was confronted with his true name.

“He lied to law enforcement officers amongst other things,” Troiano said, adding that Pearson’s criminal history in Pennsylvania includes a conviction for receiving stolen property. He has been arrested four times in New Jersey but has no convictions. There also is an active warrant in Scranton, Pa. for his arrest, Troiano said.

Pearson appeared for the bail review via a closed circuit television link between the Morris County jail and the courtroom. He politely said he understood his rights and added that he would like to make bail “and get things situated.”

He added: “I have a heart condition.”

Minkowitz found that Pearson is a flight risk and ordered him to surrender his passport and have no contact with either alleged victim if he makes bail.
