MADISON – An 18-year-old motorist from Chatham was cited for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian after, police said, she struck a woman in the crosswalk on Main Street.

Borough officers were dispatched at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Main Street and Brooklake Road on a report of a pedestrian -- identified as May Soquairs, 40, of Madison, who was struck as she was crossing Main Street from Division Avenue to get to Brooklake Road.

The operator of a Toyota sedan, identified as Rebecca Bristol, 18, of Chatham, struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk as she tried to make a left hand turn from Division Avenue onto Main Street, said borough Lt. Joseph Cirella.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital for evaluation but the extent of her injuries was not immediately available. The motorist was ticketed for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian, Cirella said.
