Hanover police find BMW perched above Whippany River

Staff report

HANOVER – A 25-year-old man is facing a variety of charges after he crashed his BMW, which police found perched precariously on a guard rail above the Whippany River, police said Monday.

Michael McCrea, of Westfield, was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

McCrea was also issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test, controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, careless driving, uninsured motor vehicle, failure to possess a registration, failure to maintain a lane of traffic and failure to obey signal signs.

Police were contacted about the accident on Jan. 27 at 2:15 a.m. Patrolmen Marc Leggour and Ed Zakrzewski responded to the scene, which was on Route 10 east in the area of Pine Plaza.

The officers found a black BMW teetering atop a guardrail with the front end hanging over a drop off into the Whippany River, police said.

The vehicle was occupied by only one person, McCrea, and he had to exit out the back hatch due to the precarious position of the vehicle, police said.

McCrea was brought to HQ to be processed but was so disorderly he was eventually placed in a cell for his own safety, police said. His bail was set at $2,500.
