Staff report

MOUNTAIN LAKES – Two teenagers are facing drug charges after a third took a type of synthetic marijuana and became sick, police said Thursday.

Police were called to Mountain Lakes High School on Jan. 7 in response to reported medical emergency.

A 17-year-old female had reportedly had a reaction to an unknown substance and further investigation determined that two other students were in possession of the substance, police said. The teen was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later released, police said.

The students, Donald Culbertson and John Duboes, both 18 years old, were charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance after an investigation conducted by Sgt. Gil Benitez and Detective Jason Dimick.

The substance was subsequently tested at the state police lab and Mountain Lakes police received confirmation that it was AB- Chminaca, which is a type of synthetic cannaboid that in this incident was ingested using an electronic cigarette, police said.
