HANOVER TWP. – One man is dead after an SUV crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on Route 287 south Tuesday afternoon, State Police said.

Capt. Stephen Jones said the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Tuesday on the right shoulder at mile marker 37.7 in Hanover Township.

The tractor trailer was stopped on the shoulder when the SUV crashed into it, Jones said.

Jones said the accident was considered serious and one man was deceased at the scene. The victim’s name was not disclosed.

At 4:30 p.m., Jones said the two right lanes were shut down, leaving only the two left lanes open for the evening commute. There was no timetable for when the lanes would reopen at that time.

A tweet from NJ State Police Twitter handle said, “Avoid the area and plan alternative route if possible,” at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday.

A subsequent tweet confirmed the fatality and said the investigation was ongoing.

Police did not release additional details Tuesday afternoon.
