Record-setting day at NJACs

HARDYSTON – Allyson Schlosser had been stuck on a plateau for almost a year. She leaped off it on Tuesday, and crashed to the track at Wallkill Valley in exhaustion and elation.

Schlosser, a Parsippany junior, won the NJAC Small-School 1,600 meters in 5:05.95, a six-second personal best and a school record. Schlosser went out in 1:12 – 72 seconds in runners' parlance -- despite head coach Briane DeGironimo telling her not to go out faster than 75. When she split 2:27 midway through, Schlosser thought, "I can't die," and picked up the pace on the third lap.

"One second was massive," said Schlosser, who had been chasing Samantha Pignatelli's school record of 5:10.17. "I had been going after it and going after it and going after it. … It's amazing. 5:05 has been my goal since freshman year. I saw 5:03 when I was three or four steps away, and I could feel my jaw drop, which wasn't good because I was breathing very heavily. I thought, 'I'm going to do this.'"

Pam Wehrer, Marlo's mother, predicted her NJAC 400-meter hurdles victory. Marlo Wehrer, a Pequannock senior, had won her first JOGA state all-around gymnastics title on Sunday in her final meet after 12 years of competition. That prompted Pam Wehrer to say, "Now you have to win the conference. She always seems to pull it off and come out on top somehow."

Still battling bronchitis that had kept her out of school for three days, Marlo Wehrer seemed flabbergasted at the victory.

"I wasn't expecting to win it or anything," said Wehrer, crediting her teammates for cheering near the starting line. "I went in hoping for the best, and ran it out."

The four NJAC small-school divisions – Freedom, Colonial, Independence and Liberty – will continue at Wallkill Valley today. The larger schools – American, National and United divisions – will be at Morris Hills.

Less than a week removed from the Morris County Relays title, Whippany Park continued its dominance of field events. Danielle Cozzarelli and Kristen Hall went 1-2 in triple jump. Junior Nickolette Dunbar also won the shot put (49-7).

Boonton senior Josh Smith called his victory in the 100 "the craziest race ever." Smith and Hackettstown's Patrick Sullivan each finished in 11.26 seconds, but the taller Smith was able to win on a lean at the line. Smith also won the 400 meters (51.57), and was sixth in the long jump.

Hackettstown senior Nioami Miranda won both the 100 and 400 on Tuesday.

"I'm just still in shock," Smith said. " I was in third place, and I started screaming. I just got a boost out of nowhere. It's like God pushed me in the back."
